The Mayor of Driffield cuts the ribbon to open the restored lock at Winhill on the 25th June 2005.

By wash By wash

Outlet of the by wash, the pipes to the right are outlet pipes from the Fish Farm.

Winhill Lock did not have a by wash, the flow of water was taken over the top gates. Before work could commence a pipe was installed to act as a by wash to maintain the level above the lock. DNAA members built a by wash above the top gates, see pictures below.

Looking down the lock chamber before during the cleaning out of the chamber. The picture on the right, preparing for the replacement of the bottom sill. If you look closely you can see that the lock has a wooden bottom which is one of the features of the locks on the Driffield Navigation. During the restoration the brickwork was repaired, lock ladders and stop plank groves were installed.

One boat did manage to use the lock fully. Colin Askin returns after taking "Tripple T" the first boat to go through after the official opening. Because of the present fixed bridge only boats of this length can use the lock until a lifting or swing bridge is installed.
