BRIGHAM BRIDGE PROGRESS

Planning Permission for Brigham Bridge was Granted on 30th April 2001. Replacement bridge fitted 28th June 2002, completion of the bridge later this year.

Over the winter months DNAA members have had several working parties at Brigham bridge. The bridge has been adjusted to its working height, the track for the bridge running gear has been fitted and work has commence painting the hand rails. Ground work adjacent to the bridge has also been carried out; three retaining walls and have been built. With the grant money now available work on landscaping the area adjacent to the bridge and improvements to safety (replacement of fencing) will be carried out by contractors before the 31st March 2003.
Update dated 28 January 2003

The bearing has now been fitted along with 7 tons of ballast weights. Simpson Civil Engineers have completed the concrete work under the bridge and at the approaches to the bridge. The bridge now requires adjusting to the correct level to mate up with the road surfaces. This will entail packing up the bearing and possible adjusting the weight of the ballast.  D.N.A.A. members have been working on the re-building of the retaining walls adjacent to the bridge. One wall has been completed, work is in hand to complete another retaining wall and bridge stop. Some repairs to damaged brickwork are also required. Work has also commence by D.N.A.A. members to paint the bridge hand rails white, completion of the painting may be delayed due to weather conditions at present.

If all goes to plan the replacement of Brigham bridge should commence on 24th June. The work is planned to take 5 days for the removal of the present fixed bridge and the installation of a new swing bridge. Pictures of the removal and installation of the new bridge will be available on Website as soon as the work is completed.

We got a grant of £17,000 less 11% from WREN. I have applied to the Horace Taylor Trust as well, but no response till end of month.
The diamond drilling cores showed that the concrete roadway over the abutment is 200mm thick, sound concrete. Chalk infill underneath. This is good news.

With the swing bridge in place at Brigham and the completion of Snakeholme lock restoration in 2002, next years Canal Gala could be held at WANSFORD.

To quote from the IWA Press Release "The construction of the swing bridge at Brigham will have many subsequent benefits for the navigation". "Driffield Navigation Trust aims to have all the necessary funding in place to allow installation of the bridge to start in June 2002". See the IWA Bulletin Click Here

brigham bridge blankBrigham Bridge (12th February 2001) as it is today, in the Navigations hay days Humber Keels passed through this bridge on their way to Driffield.  This is the Fixed Bridge; a replacement Swing Bridge which the DNAA had built some time ago whould require modification to meet the accepted Planning Permission (regarding the width of the bridge to meet the requirements of today's farm machinery). After consultation between the DNAA and the DNT it was accepted that rather than modify the replacement bridge (currently available for fitting). The cost effective option would be to construct a new bridge that will meet the requirements of the Planning Application and use the DNAA bridge to replace Bethell's Bridge. The swinging section of Bethell's Bridge was replaced in March 2003 with the DNAA bridge.
