 BRIGHAM SAILING CLUB
LOCATION Brigham Sailing Club is based at the canal side
village of Brigham off the B1249, 5 miles south of Driffield between
the villages of Wansford and North Frodingham. A useful tip is to
follow the signs for Cruckley Farm but take the Brigham turning at
the Brigham/Foston cross-roads on the B1249. Please park carefully
or if you are visiting the club by prior arrangement park in the
sailing club field. Hull is only a 45 minute journey through lovely
countryside and Bridlington is only 20 minutes away - Brigham is
convenient for members living in surrounding towns and villages.
HISTORY Formed partly from the original Driffield
Sailing Club of the late Victorian and Edwardian times, Brigham
Sailing Club was founded in 1928. Interest grew and, with the
exception of the war years, sailing has taken place at Brigham ever
since. An excellent history of the club is published in the Humber
Yawl Club magazine 1989 which is available for inspection in the
Hull Local Studies Library. RACING
Whilst over the years Brigham Sailing Club has
developed the classic boat for racing, the distinctive Brigham Scow,
we are by no means restricted and have seen craft from many
different classes participating in either club leisure sailing or
handicap racing. Racing is programmed for each Sunday afternoon
starting at 2-15 p.m. Cup races take place once a month. Check with
the Secretary to avoid disappointment if you wish to see the racing
as there are occasions when it is not possible for racing to take
place. SOCIAL
Our main attractions lie in the pleasures of
the river, with over 7 miles of non-tidal waterway meandering
through quiet countryside, the family atmosphere and suitability for
children. You do not have to have the 'latest piece of kit',
in fact you can build your own boat over the winter and extend your
interests throughout the whole year. An annual Ladies Night dinner
and cup presentation held at the Trout Inn, Wansford, is always a
well attended and most enjoyable evening. MEMBERSHIP
Like many other sailing clubs new members are
vital to Brigham Sailing Club's survival. New sailing and
non-sailing members of all ages are welcome to join. As mentioned
above you do not have to own a Scow to join. Brigham Sailing Club
encourages family boating and you can still join even if you own a
rowing boat, canoe etc. (sorry not motor boats). The club Secretary
has details of Scows for sale. You may not even have a boat, but you
can still come and support the sailing by watching at the clubhouse,
acting as 'starter' or maybe by crewing.
If you decide that Brigham Sailing Club
membership is for you, and you own a boat, there is currently a
wooden cabin available and a vacant caravan plot in the club field.
Apart form the obvious advantages of changing facilities, own Loo,
somewhere to make a cuppa etc, membership adds a new dimension to
family life. It's a great adventure for children to stay the
night. The field is rich in wildlife and Cruckley Farm is only over
the hill for younger children. Bridlington and Scarborough are quick
to get to and the Moors are convenient. Alternatively instead of
getting into heavy traffic you can enjoy a peaceful day boating at
Brigham, perhaps have a barbecue and enjoy some sunbathing in your
own private spot. On the other hand Brigham can be a place to escape
the pressures of family life or work worries!
Come and see what Brigham Sailing Club has to
offer, meet the members and perhaps go for a trial sail in one of
the beautiful Brigham Scows. If you see sails on the river you are
warmly invited to watch at the clubhouse. For more details please
contact the Secretary - details below. ANNUAL FEES Associate Membership (non sailing) costs £10 -
full sailing membership (includes mooring fees, use of club field
for parking and boat storage etc.) costs £40. Honorary Secretary,
Sara Donaldson, phone (01482) 473 213
