Syntan, one of last remaining Sheffield size motor barges that belonged to the R Hodgson and son Tannery, has returned home to Beverley Beck.

Syntan was on of 17 vessels that was a regular sight on the beck and River Hull as it supplied the market town of Beverley with the vital materials need to keep the tanning industry alive.

That was of course until they no longer had a use and road transport became king. Most of the 17 vessels no longer exist and the few that did survive have been turned into house boats or pleasure craft.

Syntan probably would have gone the same way had it not been for a group of enthusiastic individuals who were keen on capturing a part of the towns past and restoring Syntan to its former glory with the aim of placing her on the towns re-vitalised Beckside.

We followed the Beverley Barge Preservation Society (BBPS) through their purchase of Syntan to bringing her home to the beck on what was her first journey in nearly 20 years. The video 'Yorkshire Water People - Syntan Comes Home' captures that memorable voyage and looks into the history of Beverly and the important role the beck played.

We talk the people who were directly involved with Syntan from her maiden voyage through to her last days as a working barge and those that are involved with her today, working hard to restore her to her former glory.
From the first Skippers mate, Les Hill, through to the BBPS Chairman and former barge captain Neville Holgate, the video tells the tale of Syntan first hand from the people who were there, worked and lived on the Yorkshire waterways.

This entertaining, educating, informative and nostalgic video can be purchased from UPR - Focused Communication. The price is £15 and post and packaging is and additional £1. In support of the Beverly Barge Preservation Society we will donate £5 of every purchase to their fundraising appeal.
